Concrete Experience (What happened)

Monday, July 26, 2010, 10: 25 am. My group members and I had a micro teaching in Chinese camp at NOVA. We had 9 students, heritages and non-heritages, all have had learned Chinese before. Our theme was “cloth”,  which was assigned by the teacher. I taught first and were responsible for vocabulary teaching. I presented the content by PPT and real clothes. I asked students what the cloth was, and they answered me with a very tiny voice. I encouraged them by gestures and facial expressions. Furthermore, I repeated the vocabulary again and again. After that, we had a competition. They loved competition, and practiced to say the vocabulary.

Reflective Observation (What I think/feel about what happened)

This was my first teaching in America. At first, I felt stressed and worried about students would have confused what I said. However, I found that I underestimated their comprehension abilities. They could understand meanings by pictures and real clothes. And their responses became louder and active after repeating vocabulary. We had competition in the end and really enjoyed it.

Abstract Conceptualization (What I learned from thinking about what happened)

They were hard-working students and willing to learn. They gave me confidence to know I can do. Moreover, I noticed my disadvantages and had to keep my advantages. I should become better next time.

Active Experimentation (What I will do based on what I learned)

I should speak louder and let my voice full of the classroom. Speak rules clearly before the competition. Do not teach too much, I should notice students’ responses.
